Chevy 2014 Malibu becomes first US midsize sedan with stop/start technology standard

This week the folks at GM have shown off details on the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, including a rather green point of distinction. The 2014 Malibu will be the first midsize sedan sold in the United States to offer fuel-saving stop/start technology standard, coming in on its 2.5L base model. This technology allows the engine on the vehicle to shut down completely when the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

This technology first automatically turns the engine off when the car comes to – for example – a stoplight. Once the driver takes his or her foot off the brake, the engine restarts, and the driver is able to continue driving the same as they would any other vehicle. This stop/start system monitors a number of systems to make sure turning the engine off is the most efficient means of saving power.

The systems this technology monitors are vehicle speed, the force with which the brake has been applied, and climate control system operation. Amongst other systems, the monitoring of these three elements allows the stop/start system in the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu to decide if it makes more sense to just keep the engine running, too – if you’re in heavy traffic, for example.

During each of these engine restarts, the vehicle works with an auxiliary 12-volt battery which powers electric accessories such as power windows, radio, heating, and air conditioning. Employing this technology on the base model 2014 Malibu has Chevrolet aiming to mainstream stop/start technology for the masses.

“The key was to apply the knowledge we gained from our eAssist technology. By leveraging knowledge from the stop/start system we use on eAssist, we were able to significantly improve city fuel ratings by 3 mpg, or 14 percent on Malibu’s entry-level 2.5L model, compared to the 2013 model.” – Todd Pawlik, Malibu chief engineer

This vehicle also works with Intake Valve Lift Control valve-actuation technology, allowing the engine on the vehicle to pump only the air needed to meet the demand of the driver. That’s in low-lift mode – in high-lift mode, the engine switches to full output capabilities to take on heavy loads and high speeds.

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is available in three trims: LS, LT, and LTZ, each of them coming in with an $825 destination charge at prices that bump by 2k a level: $22,965 for the LS, $24,335 for the 1LT, $26,040 for the 2LT and $28,515 for the top LTZ trim. These prices exclude tax, title, license, and all dealer fees.

Chevrolet’s 3-D prototype process may drive the development of cooler cars in the future

A new process used to update the Chevrolet Malibu for the 2014 model sounds more like the plot of a sci-fi movie than anything tied to designing cars.

To refresh the Malibu’s interior and exterior, Chevrolet designers used a process known as rapid
prototyping, which involves 3-D printing of parts.

The technology, as described in a Chevrolet press release, “literally” grows prototype parts out of powder or liquid resin at a fraction of the cost associated with building tools to make test parts.

Rapid prototyping, which uses processes officially known as selective laser sintering and stereo lithography, requires specialized software, math data and digital lasers, which accomplish in days what would have taken weeks of clay sculpting in the past, notes Chevrolet.

In a nutshell, it enables designers and engineers to more quickly build test versions of car components and systems that they can actually see, touch and feel in precise one-third scale and full-size models without having to make changes to production tooling, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“When you need to get intricate, fully functional prototype parts quickly, nothing beats rapid prototyping,” said Todd Pawlik, chief engineer, Chevrolet mid- and full-size cars. “Our ability to rapidly fabricate inexpensive prototype parts throughout a vehicle enables key components to get confirmed earlier so that we can go from computer models to production-caliber parts.”

On the Malibu, rapid prototyping was used to update the sedan’s new floor console (below), which now features a pair of integrated smartphone holders for the driver and passenger. The new console also weighs less, which helps contribute to the Malibu’s improved fuel economy over the previous model.

Stolen ‘Pulp Fiction’ Classic Chevrolet Recovered 19 Years Later!

Saturday, April 27, 2013 the New York Daily News reported that the convertible featured in Quentin Tarantino’s classic flick was returned almost two decades after being pilfered!

Authorities say the classic Chevrolet convertible featured in the film "Pulp Fiction" has been found nearly two decades after it was stolen.

The San Bernardino County Sun reports movie director Quentin Tarantino's 1964 Chevy Malibu Convertible was recovered in the San Francisco Bay area earlier this week.

John Travolta's character drove the cherry red car in the movie.

Sheriff's Sgt. Albert Anolin said an investigation into an old Malibu in the desert city of Victorville on April 18 led detectives to another Malibu in the Oakland area. They then confirmed that vehicle belonged to Tarantino and was reported stolen in 1994.

Authorities say the car's current owner is not believed to be involved in its theft and is considered to be a victim of a fraud.

A message seeking Tarantino's comment was not immediately returned.

NowNunz Takes the 2013 Malibu for a Ride

The ALL NEW 2013 Chevy Malibu has been a hit since it’s landed in dealerships. There is much to like about this midsize sedan, but we realize that in the past, the Malibu has not particularly been a favorite Chevy model, so we decided to help consumers recognize not only its looks and interior but also its value and spaciousness.

2013 Chevy Malibu is a solid choice for a family sedan. The Malibu has earned knockout scores from both sets of crash tests. It also has many features you'd like to see as standard equipment. Some features we’d like to highlight are the upscale interior, advanced high-tech features, and composed and comfortable ride.

We gave @NowNunz one of our own to test out and come back with some feedback. Like most, he was pleasantly surprised by the 2013 Chevy sedan. He expressed that he thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the aesthetics of the redesigned Malibu. Check out his video:
