Secrets of the Chevrolet Camaro

One of America’s favorite pony cars, the Camaro has an interesting past with more than a few buried facts and secrets hiding just below the radar. Here are five of our favorites:

1. The Camaro was almost called the Panther — It took a while for Chevrolet to come up with a final name for the Camaro. For quite some time it was referred to internally as the Chevrolet Panther. In end, Chevy’s preference for names beginning with a “C” won out, and the Panther name died as part of an elaborate PR campaign.

3. The Camaro was actually a Canadian Import — Like William Shatner and Michael J. Fox, the seemingly All-American Camaro was actually stealth Canadian. From 1993-2002, the Camaro and its twin, the Pontiac Firebird, were built in St. Thérèse, Quebec, a Montreal suburb.

5. “Camaro” means nothing — The name was actually a contrived moniker, much like “Camry” and “Corolla.” Although some claim that it is French slang for “friend,” neither the GM product people (nor most French-speakers, for that matter) are aware of this.

7. “Outpaced” the Mustang — Although the Camaro came 2½ years after the Mustang and was often outsold by the Mustang, it has a healthy lead in the Indianapolis 500. The Camaro has been the official pace car at Indy six times, versus just three for the Mustang. Only the Corvette (12) has paced more 500s than the Camaro.

Current Base V-6 Puts V-8s of old to shame — Amazing as it may seem, the 2013 base six-cylinder engine, at 323 hp, puts out more ponies than the most powerful small-block V-8 in the original car (295 hp). In fact, it probably makes nearly as much power as the fiercest big block V-8 of 1967, the 396 cubic inch, 375 hp. In modern “net horsepower” (measured with mufflers and accessories hooked up), the new six and the old big-block V-8 are probably just about even.

Tips on Convertible Car Care

A convertible is a stylish choice of automobile that has been consistently popular for decades, and it isn’t difficult to see why. A convertible affords you a unique driving experience, able to enjoy the sun on your face and the wind in your hair while moving at incredible speeds. Like any car, though, convertibles need regular maintenance, and one thing that must be taken care of is the car’s convertible top. It will require some time and a little elbow grease, but it will definitely pay off. After all, if the top breaks, you’ll either be left with a standard roof, or no roof at all! Thankfully, if you’re wondering how to clean and care for your car’s convertible top, you’ll be relieved to find that it’s actually quite simple.

What Products Clean Convertible Tops?

First, make sure you buy the right kind of cleaner for your convertible top. The two most common choices for convertible tops are vinyl and fabric, and these materials require regular cleaning in order to look their best. The label should specify which kind of top it is made for. If it’s doesn’t, don’t buy it—it’s worth making sure that you have the right equipment for the job. Vinyl can often be cleaned with regular car shampoo, although some standard soap may be too harsh for the job. Fabric, on the other hand, requires a fabric top cleaner. Simply wash as usual with a soft-bristled brush and then hose the suds off, and you’ll find the top shining in no time. While vinyl is designed to be water-repellent, fabric is not; it is treated so that it is suitable for use as a convertible top. A fabric guard will keep you from getting soaked while it is raining. Simply apply with a flat sponge, making sure to get every part of the roof. Several light coats are preferable to one thick coat, which will take a long time to dry. If you live in a particularly rainy area, one coat per month should be plenty; less is needed for drier climates.

Protect Your Convertible Top and It Will Protect You

It is important to treat the convertible top itself well. Although most modern models retract automatically, you should make sure that there are no obstructions, or you could damage the mechanism and potentially tear the fabric. Many vintage convertibles have to be retracted by hand, which is easy, but remember to be gentle—after all, older parts are usually more difficult to find. Thankfully, convertibles require little maintenance beyond this. You’ll find that cleaning and caring for your convertible top is a cinch, leaving you free to drive off into the sunset!

Chevy Releases a Peek of the 2014 Camaro

The "peek" is very little, but definitely intriguing enough to have us stay tuned until the 2013 New York Auto Show.

Chevrolet's Camaro is due for a refresh, having been on the market since 2009 and the good news is, it's safe to say affirmative on the update! The automaker officially announced that its muscle car will get a mild makeover and that the refreshed model will make its debut the end of this month in New York at the International Auto Show. Just to get Camaro fans going, the sneak peek single photo leak is of the 2014's grille.

We really don't know what tweaks to expect on the updated Camaro, but from the photo we're able to see that the grille appears to be thinner and mounted more flush against the front fascia. The grille's detailing is similar the to 2014 Impala which goes on sale at the end of next month. Maybe, just maybe, we can get some ideas of what Camaro tweaks we can expect.

Here's to hoping the LED taillights available on Europe-market Camaros make their way onto our refreshed model!
