FEUD OF THE WEEK: CHEVY VS. THE FIELD

Unlike many races, there were no on-track tirades in Sunday's Brickyard 400, no boys having at it, or men behaving badly, as it were.

That said, there was one old-fashioned ass-kicking that went on at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday: The beatdown Chevrolet gave to the competition.
Brickyard 400 winner Ryan Newman piloted a Chevrolet SS.
So did runner-up Jimmie Johnson.
And third-place Kasey Kahne, as well as fourth-place Tony Stewart.
Throw in Dale Earnhardt Jr. (6th), Jeff Gordon (7th) and Juan Pablo Montoya (9th) and Chevrolet drivers took the top four spots and seven of the top nine.
What's even more remarkable was the fact that this is Chevy's 11th straight Brickyard 400 victory and 15th in 20 editions of the iconic race.
How big a can of whupass has Chevy opened on the competition at the Brickyard? The highest-finishing Ford driver on Sunday was Joey Logano. The last time a Ford won the Brickyard 400, Logano was an 8-year-old elementary school student. Hell, Dodge and Pontiac have more recent Brickyard victories than Ford and Toyota has never won this race.
Not coincidentally, the top-four finishers and six of the top seven, were powered by Chevrolet engines built by Hendrick Motorsports.
"We had pretty good power all day long," said Stewart, the fourth-place finisher and co-owner of Newman's race-winning car. "I mean, there were a lot of scenarios where I noticed how good it was. And that's what you expect out of the Hendrick engine department. That's the standard that they set.
"It was good to know at a place like this where it's so key, you've got to get down the straightaways. You're not going to pass somebody on the outside in the corners here. You have to get off the corner and get down the straightaway. That's a big asset having that Hendrick power under the hood."
The second- and third-place finishers concurred.
"I know myself I was running good," said Johnson.
"I felt good all day," added Kahne.
As for the competition? They knew they were licked.
"They were way faster than us and they were up there pretty far," said Toyota driver Matt Kenseth of the Chevy armada. "Jimmie (Johnson) went by me so quick that I thought he was going to suck the numbers off the doors.  He was really quick.  Ryan (Newman) had a really fast car.  We had a top-10 car most of the day, but I couldn't run with those guys."
The good news for the Ford and Toyota teams who left Indy licking their wounds?
There's another race next week.

Purple? Pink? Chevrolet Bets on Wacky Car Colors

There's something about the smallest of cars that lend themselves to wild paint jobs.

But purple? And pink? When it comes to its two smallest models, Sonic and Spark, Chevrolet is plumbing the depths of customer appeal for colors like, well, plum.

The Chevrolet Sonic is temporarily going to come in a new color, Deep Magenta Metallic, which is described as a "chromatic plum" color. It's the kind of hue that car executives are hesitant to call for what it is: purple.

With the possible exception of old Plymouth Barracudas -- for which purple became somewhat of a signature color -- purple has been the kind of color that gets a car relegated to the back of sales lots. Never mind that Bentley showed off its latest Flying Spur model in purple at the New York Auto Show last spring.

Chevrolet is intent on being bold. About one-third of our Sonic buyers say a cool paint job is an 'extremely important' factor in their decision.

Chevy is being just as creative when it comes to its smaller car, Spark. Out went Inferno Orange and in came Techno Pink. At least it's called pink.

Chevrolet says it looks everywhere in developing a new color -- fashion runways, consumer products and high-end furniture galleries. But even when they appear popular, it's easy to balk at some colors.

Katherine Sirvio, GM senior design manager in charge of Chevy colors and trim globally, didn't want to include pink as a color when it launched Spark in South Korea three year ago. "We shied away from pink because it's kind of a cliché" as a lure for female buyers, she says.

But after surveying personal electronics and home appliances, changed her mind. Sure enough, nearly one out of four Sparks sold in South Korea are now pink.

Secrets of the Chevrolet Camaro

One of America’s favorite pony cars, the Camaro has an interesting past with more than a few buried facts and secrets hiding just below the radar. Here are five of our favorites:

  1. The Camaro was almost called the Panther — It took a while for Chevrolet to come up with a final name for the Camaro. For quite some time it was referred to internally as the Chevrolet Panther. In end, Chevy’s preference for names beginning with a “C” won out, and the Panther name died as part of an elaborate PR campaign.

  2. The Camaro was actually a Canadian Import — Like William Shatner and Michael J. Fox, the seemingly All-American Camaro was actually stealth Canadian. From 1993-2002, the Camaro and its twin, the Pontiac Firebird, were built in St. Thérèse, Quebec, a Montreal suburb.

  3. “Camaro” means nothing — The name was actually a contrived moniker, much like “Camry” and “Corolla.” Although some claim that it is French slang for “friend,” neither the GM product people (nor most French-speakers, for that matter) are aware of this.

  4. “Outpaced” the Mustang — Although the Camaro came 2½ years after the Mustang and was often outsold by the Mustang, it has a healthy lead in the Indianapolis 500. The Camaro has been the official pace car at Indy six times, versus just three for the Mustang. Only the Corvette (12) has paced more 500s than the Camaro.

  5. Current Base V-6 Puts V-8s of old to shame — Amazing as it may seem, the 2013 base six-cylinder engine, at 323 hp, puts out more ponies than the most powerful small-block V-8 in the original car (295 hp). In fact, it probably makes nearly as much power as the fiercest big block V-8 of 1967, the 396 cubic inch, 375 hp. In modern “net horsepower” (measured with mufflers and accessories hooked up), the new six and the old big-block V-8 are probably just about even.

Hagerty's employees just recently finished a full restoration of a 1969 Camaro SS.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will have supercar-slaying performance with HPE1000 Twin Turbo upgrade

Tuning powerhouse Hennessey is getting the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ready for a complete makeover, even before the all-American sports car hits dealerships later this year. The completely revamped C7 Corvette will be available with upwards of 1,000 horsepower, thanks to Hennessey’s tire-melting twin-turbo upgrade package.

Hennessey has a very nice habit of making some extremely quick machinery. The Texas-based tuning firm’s wildest creation, the Venom GT, delivers Bugatti-rivaling performance thanks to its 1,200-hp engine and a top speed of more than 260 mph.

Now, Hennessey is turning its attention to the brand new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. This entirely new ‘Vette hasn’t even arrived at dealerships, but it’s already getting prepped for some outrageous performance upgrades.

The most powerful and extensive is Hennessey’s HPE1000 Twin Turbo upgrade, which endows the Corvette with roughly 1,000-hp. That’s more than double the car’s stock power output, and it should be enough to let the Chevy sports car challenge the world’s best supercars.

As you’d expect, the bulk of modifications are centered on the Corvette’s powertrain. In addition to being fitted with twin ball bearing turbochargers, Hennessey has added dual wastegates, an air-to-air intercooler, forged aluminum pistons, high flow cylinder heads, custom camshafts and an electronic boost controller.

We could go on, but you get the point.

Externally, the HPE1000 Twin Turbo doesn’t look dramatically different from the stock Corvette Stingray – though we’re certain this could change at the whim of a Hennessey customer. Hennessey alloy wheels, and relatively subtle carbon-fiber aerodynamic additions (including a revised front splitter and rear spoiler) constitute the bulk of exterior modifications.

Sales are expected right around the time the 2014 Corvette Stingray arrives this fall.

Nebraska's Lambrecht Chevrolet Dealership To Hold “Time Capsule” Auction

Lambrecht Chevrolet in Pierce, Nebraska, is a dealership rich in history. Mr. Ray Lambrecht opened the dealership with his bride, Mildred, in 1946 when he returned from World War II. It stayed open with only one additional employee for exactly 50 years before it closed its doors in 1996. This is a fairly common story as so many GM dealerships have gone by the wayside in the past couple of decades.

Rare and Expensive: It is thought that this Corvette Stingray (top) with four miles on the clock might reach upwards of $50,000 - while the blue Chevy Cameo (bottom) is hoped to make upwards of six figures.

However, when the Lambrecht’s closed the doors, they left behind 514 cars (mostly Chevy) inside and in a nearby field. Many of the cars were trade-ins, but about fifty of them have been stuck in a time-warp – they were never titled, barely driven, and many have less than twenty miles on the odometer. They were left unsold at the end of the year and tucked away to gather dust. There is a video floating around of a few of the incredible survivors making their way into sunlight for the first time in decades.

Rusted and Ruined: Despite the rarity of cars with almost zero on the odometer - the majority of the vehicles in the auction are trade-ins left to rot like this old fashioned car.

According to the Lambrecht’s daughter, Jeannie Lambrecht Stillwell, her father can remember the story of each vehicle and the family has a strong attachment to the collection, but Ray and Mildred, at 95 and 92 respectively, they have decided to liquidate the dealership’s inventory.

Among the incredible collection are: a 1958 Cameo pickup truck with a single mile on the odometer, a 1978 Corvette with four miles, and a 1964 Impala with just four miles.

Collectors Items: Some of the cars such as the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air (top) and 1978 Chevrolet Impala (bottom) belonging to the Lembrecht family have been sealed away for 17-years to preserve their condition and motors

The entire lot, including parts and other cool historic merchandise, goes up for auction in Piece, Nebraska, on September 28 and 29, 2013. VanDerBrink Auctions will be conducting the Lambrecht Chevrolet auction, which will be open to the general public.
