Allstate Offers Advice on How to Avoid Deer-Vehicle Collisions

Insurance company Allstate is once again reminding motorists to be on the lookout for crossing deer.

Auto claim data shows vehicle collisions with animals spike in frequency from October through December. Thirty eight percent of claims from animal collisions occur in the last three months of the year, with more than 13,000 recorded animal strikes in the month of November. Allstate customers’ average national repair cost from a vehicle collision with an animal is around $2,800, the insurance company said.
According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), insurance claims for damage from collisions with animals rise sharply every fall, coinciding with deer mating season.
“Allstate reminds drivers to pay extra attention on the road for deer and other animals during this time,” said Samuel Whiteman, Allstate claim director. “If you live in areas with large deer populations, you’ll likely see increased activity and unfortunately hear more stories of vehicle collisions with deer.”

Allstate and the Insurance Information Institute have prepared a number of defensive driving tips to limit deer-vehicle collisions. You can pass their advice along to your fleet drivers:
  • Be especially attentive from sunset to midnight and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise. These are the highest risk times for deer-vehicle collisions.
  • If you see one deer cross, slow down and watch for others to follow.
  • Look for movement where roads are bordered by fields or natural habitat.
  • Heed deer crossing signs and reduce speed in deer “hot spots.”
  • When driving at night, use high beam headlights when there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the roadway.
  • Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path, but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their vehicle.
  • Always wear your seat belt. Deer-vehicle collisions can result in serious injuries, and even death.
  • Ensure that your brakes and tires are in good working order. A properly functioning vehicle can help if you need to react quickly.
Here are additional tips for drivers that do get into an accident with an animal:
  • Dial 9-1-1.
  • Do not attempt to touch an injured animal that’s in or near the road. When the police arrive, they will be able to call the proper local authorities to care for the animal.
  • Always follow your company's fleet procedures for reporting collisions.

Ready at Last: Chevrolet Ships New 2014 Corvettes

For the gotta-be-first crowd, Chevrolet announced Wednesday it has begun shipping the new 2014 Corvette Stingray to dealers.

Among the things that General Motors has done well lately, building the hoopla and anticipation for the new Corvette has been in the forefront. The new seventh-generation Corvette is vastly different than the one it replaces -- completely updated, with a much improved interior -- and the early ones are almost certainly all being claimed by the 'Vette faithful.
The 455-horsepower sports car starts at $51,995 including destination fees. The convertible version starts at $56,995.
So far, GM says its Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant has churned out about 1,000 Corvette Stingrays. Most of these vehicles are expected to be delivered to dealers within the next few weeks, where we imagine they won't stay long before buyers snap them up.
"It's an amazing sight to see the transporters filled with Stingrays heading to customers in all corners of the country," says Dave Tatman, plant manager of General Motors' Bowling Green Assembly plant, in a statement. "The pride at Bowling Green is overwhelming."
To get ready, GM put its Bowling Green plant thorough a $131 million upgrade. Of that, about $52 million was funneled into the shop that makes the car's new light-but-strong aluminum frame.

Edmund's Reports: "The Corvette is as good as the 911, maybe better." [WATCH THE VIDEO]

IT'S TRUE! Edmund's reports on the
Purveyor of Powerslides VS the Prince of Precision!

EDMUNDS: So we're stuck. Stuck with a decision no enthusiast can fairly make. Picking the 'Vette is the obvious choice since it's supported by ample empirical data. At the end of the day, we can't deny that the home team nailed at least one of its primary targets. Making the Corvette as quick and rewarding as a 911 is a big task, and it's been fully accomplished.

The Corvette, when driven hard, is as good as the 911, maybe better.
There, we said it.

But then there's the undeniable reality that the 911 is the better car. Whether we're taking our kids to school or adding subtle countersteer to correct that big slide, we'd rather have the Porsche. It's the car that wins our hearts so it's the car that wins this test.

Chevy 2014 Malibu becomes first US midsize sedan with stop/start technology standard

This week the folks at GM have shown off details on the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, including a rather green point of distinction. The 2014 Malibu will be the first midsize sedan sold in the United States to offer fuel-saving stop/start technology standard, coming in on its 2.5L base model. This technology allows the engine on the vehicle to shut down completely when the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

This technology first automatically turns the engine off when the car comes to – for example – a stoplight. Once the driver takes his or her foot off the brake, the engine restarts, and the driver is able to continue driving the same as they would any other vehicle. This stop/start system monitors a number of systems to make sure turning the engine off is the most efficient means of saving power.

The systems this technology monitors are vehicle speed, the force with which the brake has been applied, and climate control system operation. Amongst other systems, the monitoring of these three elements allows the stop/start system in the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu to decide if it makes more sense to just keep the engine running, too – if you’re in heavy traffic, for example.

During each of these engine restarts, the vehicle works with an auxiliary 12-volt battery which powers electric accessories such as power windows, radio, heating, and air conditioning. Employing this technology on the base model 2014 Malibu has Chevrolet aiming to mainstream stop/start technology for the masses.

“The key was to apply the knowledge we gained from our eAssist technology. By leveraging knowledge from the stop/start system we use on eAssist, we were able to significantly improve city fuel ratings by 3 mpg, or 14 percent on Malibu’s entry-level 2.5L model, compared to the 2013 model.” – Todd Pawlik, Malibu chief engineer

This vehicle also works with Intake Valve Lift Control valve-actuation technology, allowing the engine on the vehicle to pump only the air needed to meet the demand of the driver. That’s in low-lift mode – in high-lift mode, the engine switches to full output capabilities to take on heavy loads and high speeds.

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is available in three trims: LS, LT, and LTZ, each of them coming in with an $825 destination charge at prices that bump by 2k a level: $22,965 for the LS, $24,335 for the 1LT, $26,040 for the 2LT and $28,515 for the top LTZ trim. These prices exclude tax, title, license, and all dealer fees.

Chevrolet Seeks Younger Buyers for NEW Corvette [VIDEO]

Updated looks and better performance will be the draw against Germany's best!

How good can life be?

Just remove the hardtop roof panel of a new Corvette Stingray, punch the accelerator to fully absorb the reassuring rumble of its V-8 and feel the wind in your hair. You may find the answer.

Chevrolet has completely updated its famous sports car in a bid for more respect among world-class sports cars, and with an eye to attracting new and younger fans and buyers. The 2014 Corvette aims valiantly to shed an image of being the embodiment of the Ugly American — powerful yet unrefined and fat.

The Corvette's new cockpit makes full use of real stuff — leather, carbon-fiber accents and aluminum — in contrast to a sea of plastic that marked the outgoing model. At 460 horsepower, the 6.2-liter V-8 with the performance exhaust system has 25 more ponies than the engine it replaces, yet is powerful, smooth and more efficient. On undulating roads near Monterey, Calif., Corvette is fun and confident, planting itself firmly in even the tightest curves.

The whole package is good enough that for the seventh generation of the car since Corvette rolled out in 1953, Chevrolet is declaring war anew on Porsche and other European sports cars. In the process, it also is taking dead aim at younger, affluent driving enthusiasts who may have written off Corvette as their dad's plaything.

The average age of a buyer of the current Corvette has been climbing each year and now is in the high 50s. It wants more of the upwardly mobile buyers in their 40s and even younger looking to reward themselves. Plus, Corvette attracts more blue-collar customers than other sports car brands. Nothing wrong with that, but it does mean that more buyers have to stretch their budgets for one. General Motors wouldn't mind having more fans rich enough to pick up a sports car on a whim, and take the top of the line.

Looking forward to the ALL NEW Corvette?
We an't wait either!!

Sneak Peek at New Racing Corvette

As if anyone had any doubt about a racing version of the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, the answer came Saturday at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

Without any prior warning to the hundreds of Corvette fans gathered here, what is expected to be the next racing Corvette -- clad in black-and-white camouflage -- took a lap at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

It was supposed to be a "parade lap," but it seemed mighty fast. The Corvette, designated the C7.R, was driven hard around the track, apparently to signal that it intends to be a force like never before on the racing circuit. It's the seventh generation Corvette and the R stands for racing.

The lap comes days after the new seventh-generation Corvette made available for drives bythe press near here last week. The new car is more powerful and more capable than the one it replaces, and it has dramatic new styling. The styling stood out in particular when it came to the racing version of the Corvette.

Its first racing appearance won't come until January in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Volunteering High On One Local Businessman’s Ladder

From the Mt Olive News
By Cheryl Conway

Most non-paid emergency service and fire department volunteers live in the town they serve to help their neighbor, be involved or give back to their community.

In Mt. Olive, there is one business owner who has gone above and beyond his line of duty to serve not only in the town he lives but in the town he works. Adam Barish of Kinnelon - owner of Route 46 Chevrolet in Hackettstown - has recently joined the Budd Lake Volunteer Fire Company #1 as a part-time volunteer fire fighter.

He is a non-paid volunteer in all corners of his world just because he feels it is the right thing to do.

“I just have this natural desire to help the community at large,” says Barish. “It started when I was 16 and it just sticks with me.I just want to contribute to this world; I get self-satisfaction from it.”

As a resident of Kinnelon, Barish has served the Kinnelon Fire Department for the past 14 years. He currently serves as a regular member but has also served at second assistant and first assistant of that department. Knowing how much Kinnelon “hurts for people during the day” to volunteer their time, Barish figured why not volunteer in the town he works in during the day.

So he walked down to the Budd LakeFire Dept. and “they put me on instantly,”says Barish. They had a part time spot for him so he could help out during the daytime. “I met all the guys and they put me on.” Barish just joined on June 1.

“I may as well give to the communityt hat’s giving to my livelihood,” says Barish, who has owned Route 46 Chevrolet since Aug. 15, 2012. The dealership was formerly called Kevil Chevrolet and was owned by Mike Kevil, who ran the dealership since1984 until he died July 2012 of a heart attack, he says.

Barish and his sister, Jessica - also owns Route 23 Honda in Pompton Plains.

Barish got involved as a volunteer when he was 16 yeas old, when he and some friends got EMT certified and joined theWest Orange First Aid Squad, which he served for eight years.

He worked for the First Aid Squad in Pequannock from 1990 to 1991 and then in 1999 joined the Kinnelon Fire Department. Barish also currently serves as Kinnelon’s Volunteering High On One Local Businessman’s Ladder Department Emergency Management Coordinator (DEMC). As a certified coordinator of the Community Emergency Response Team, Barish trains others in first aid, basic fire suppression, search and rescue, disaster psychology, and terrorism awareness.

In May, Barish was voted Kinnelon Citizen of the Year by the Lakeland Hills YMCA in Mountain Lakes for his efforts like setting up a Facebook Page during Hurricane Sandy to inform residents on daily statuses and power outages.

“I just love this stuff,” he says. He is certified in fire fighter I and II, fire officer, IMS Level I, small boat and water rescue.

Barish has enjoyed the camaraderie and self satisfaction that comes with his volunteering.By being involved in the fire department, Barish appreciates “hanging out with people who want to help others; who aren’t afraid to run into a building while others are running out; to be with other doers, other rescuers.”

When he is responding to calls in Kinnelon, he says he feels the appreciation from his neighbors.

“I’m your neighbor,” says Barish. “This fear and worry turns into ‘thank God for my neighbor or showing up.” There is a “satis-faction of seeing your neighbor face to face;you tend to be the go to person,” or the per-son to go to for advice.

“Advanced first aid, it sticks with you forever,” says Barish. “There’s a certain sat-isfaction.” Whether there is an emergency in a park or a restaurant, he’s “always the goto guy. There’s a certain amount of self-satisfaction that comes when you know what to do. Emergency stuff always happens in front of me.”

Barish recalls the time he was waiting in line at Sea World when he came to the aid of another man who became overheated. “I grabbed him, lowered him down, put him in the shade and put his feet up, put a bottle of water under his shirt. It’s just stuff that stays with you. You don’t do it because you want to be the local hero. You are there because they want to give back to the com-munity. You want to do something to help others.”Barish has been a positive influence to others.

“It sets a great example to my children seeing me volunteer and doing,” says Barish. His son, Evan, 16, joined the Kinnelon Fire Department Junior program this past May; and his wife Kimberly, joined the Kinnelon Fire Auxiliary in 1999 and serves as its treasurer.

“I talk to people all the time and every-one says I don’t have the time, I have a family, I have a job. You have more confidence in what you are doing once you are trained. If anyone can give that much more and you show up for one call a week, that’s one more less that the other volunteers have to do.”

Also, “with all these volunteers, it keeps our taxes down. ”After the drowning of two teenagers last year on Budd Lake, Barish donated three ice rescue suits from Route 46 Chevrolet to the Budd lake Fire Department, a value of $3,608 in equipment.

“It’s unusual for someone out of town to get involved,” says Barish. “I understand there are a lot of sole proprietors. I’m fortu-nate enough to have a staff who can fill in.The fire department is literally two minutes down the road. It’s when you start giving your time that you really care.”

Barish encourages others to consider volunteering. “If you have even the slightest interest,go explore it,” says Barish. “Talk to your local fire department or rescue squad. Wherever you are, if you’ve been thinking about it, go act on it. You’re going to love every minute of it.”
