Forget the Minivan! 2013 Chevrolet Traverse Outshines with Standard Third Row

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse may have killed the Chevrolet Uplander, but that's a good thing. The Traverse features a standard third row, rear view camera, and curtain airbags. How much does the Chevrolet Traverse cost?

It's fairly undeniable that the crossover utility vehicle has made the minivan an endangered species. In Chevrolet's case, the Traverse has made the division's minivan extinct, which is a good thing as GM's minivans were terrible efforts compared to the rest of the industry's offerings.

No longer bedeviled by having to distract your eyes from the world's ugliest sliding doors, Chevrolet's engineers have been allowed to focus on their greatest strength—of throwing in ever more standard equipment for modest price bumps. The Traverse comes with standard equipment that are options on its competition. Standard third row seating? Check. Standard rear view camera system? Check. Standard head curtain airbags as roll over protection? Check.

Also standard on all Traverse models is its most powerful available engine, a 3.6L V6 with continuously variable valve timing, producing a healthy 288 BHP and 270 ft.-lbs. of torque. This engine represents top of the class power figures while still returning 17/24 city/highway on front wheel drive models and 16/23 on full time AWD versions. Front wheel driven models are rated for 5,200 pounds towing capacity. All models feature a six speed automatic transmission, and the 2013 models have more immediate downshifting in response to the throttle when sudden acceleration is demanded.

While the power train is nice and the standard safety features are great, the calling card of the Traverse is class leading space. For it is this spaciousness that not only leaves the Chevrolet minivans of yore unlamented, it gives the division something to crow about as world beating. The Traverse is long, coming in at 9.9 feet between the axles. The entire vehicle, bumper to bumper, comes in at just shy of 17 feet.

That means a decent amount of the Traverse continues on past the rear axle. In fact, even with its third row in action, there remains 24.4 cubic feet of cargo room, roughly the equal or better than the trunk of nearly every full sized sedan on the market. With the third row folded, there are a cavernous 70.3 cubes available. No one is missing the Uplander van, especially when the Traverse's third row access has been made a one touch sliding affair that ten year olds can easily handle. The sliding door of yesteryear has been made nearly obsolete.

As with many modern vehicles, onboard proximity radar systems are optionally available on the Traverse. On the LTZ trim level, side and rear blind spot proximity warnings have your back against things you can't see, providing both audio and visual cues that a collision is imminent.

With prices beginning at just north of $30,300 before destination charges, for the amount of space you get in return, you'd be hard pressed to come up with more for less. The Traverse, despite its facelift, may still not be much of a looker, but it has all of the power, safety, and convenience
features you could reasonably need.

You only have to go to options for your wants.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Reportedly Returning to U.S. in 2014

Is the Chevrolet Trailblazer on the comeback trail?

Edmunds.com reports that Chevy will start selling its all-new truck-based midsized SUV in the United States in 2014. Currently built in Thailand and sold in overseas markets, an industry source told the website that a version of the truck will hit U.S. showrooms next year.

Chevrolet denies the report, saying it already has a full lineup of crossovers and SUVs, but ever since it announced it was bringing back the Colorado midsize pickup in 2014, rumors have been swirling around the potential return of the Trailblazer.

The addition of the body-on-frame SUV would give the automaker a more rugged offering to better compete with vehicles like the popular Jeep Grand Cherokee than its current crossover-based models, the Equinox and Traverse.
The source could not confirm what it would be called or where it would be made, but the Colorado and its GMC Canyon twin are set to be built in Wentzville, Missouri, and is expected to make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Who knows, maybe it will have something parked next to it on the stand.

GM Gives Chevrolet Volt a Jolt with Price Cut

The Volt is getting a jolt -- at least when it comes to price.

The slow selling newfangled plug-in car, which is supposed to the star of General Motors' portfolio, is going to have $5,000 knocked off its list price. The 2014 Volt will now cost $34,995, including shipping, 12.5% less than last year's model.

With a full $7,500 federal tax credit, the price is cut to $27,495. Some states have tax credits as well.

GM's move follows a similar price reduction for Nissan's all-electric Leaf and Ford's Focus Electric. Unlike those other two, the Volt has a backup gas engine that should give it more appeal to motorists who want to stay green without having the inconvience of finding ways to plug in whereever they go. The Volt can go on electric power alone for 38 miles, enough, GM says, for most people to get to work and maybe back, too. GM says owners average 900 miles between fill ups.

The price cut could also help clear the way for GM's next car based on the same technology, the Cadillac ELR. That luxury plug-in's pricing is yet to be announced.

Volt sales fell 3.3% last month, although they are up 9.2% for the first seven months of the year, Autodata reports.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is Here!

The new four-eyed headlight look is growing on us.

With houses in disrepair, racecars that need towing and an affinity for flat-box shopping and yard sales, there's nothing like having a pickup truck. And when it comes to pickup trucks, nobody does it like America.
Among the Big Three, more than a million new pickup trucks roll into new owners' hands every year, so when one of them releases a new model, it's a huge deal. This year, GM has done just that with the 2014 Chevy Silverado. The styling may be familiar, but this truck is all new from top to bottom.
Think Chevy had a high bar to clear with the C7 Corvette? That was nothing compared to redoing its most popular model.

FEUD OF THE WEEK: CHEVY VS. THE FIELD

Unlike many races, there were no on-track tirades in Sunday's Brickyard 400, no boys having at it, or men behaving badly, as it were.

That said, there was one old-fashioned ass-kicking that went on at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday: The beatdown Chevrolet gave to the competition.
Brickyard 400 winner Ryan Newman piloted a Chevrolet SS.
So did runner-up Jimmie Johnson.
And third-place Kasey Kahne, as well as fourth-place Tony Stewart.
Throw in Dale Earnhardt Jr. (6th), Jeff Gordon (7th) and Juan Pablo Montoya (9th) and Chevrolet drivers took the top four spots and seven of the top nine.
What's even more remarkable was the fact that this is Chevy's 11th straight Brickyard 400 victory and 15th in 20 editions of the iconic race.
How big a can of whupass has Chevy opened on the competition at the Brickyard? The highest-finishing Ford driver on Sunday was Joey Logano. The last time a Ford won the Brickyard 400, Logano was an 8-year-old elementary school student. Hell, Dodge and Pontiac have more recent Brickyard victories than Ford and Toyota has never won this race.
Not coincidentally, the top-four finishers and six of the top seven, were powered by Chevrolet engines built by Hendrick Motorsports.
"We had pretty good power all day long," said Stewart, the fourth-place finisher and co-owner of Newman's race-winning car. "I mean, there were a lot of scenarios where I noticed how good it was. And that's what you expect out of the Hendrick engine department. That's the standard that they set.
"It was good to know at a place like this where it's so key, you've got to get down the straightaways. You're not going to pass somebody on the outside in the corners here. You have to get off the corner and get down the straightaway. That's a big asset having that Hendrick power under the hood."
The second- and third-place finishers concurred.
"I know myself I was running good," said Johnson.
"I felt good all day," added Kahne.
As for the competition? They knew they were licked.
"They were way faster than us and they were up there pretty far," said Toyota driver Matt Kenseth of the Chevy armada. "Jimmie (Johnson) went by me so quick that I thought he was going to suck the numbers off the doors.  He was really quick.  Ryan (Newman) had a really fast car.  We had a top-10 car most of the day, but I couldn't run with those guys."
The good news for the Ford and Toyota teams who left Indy licking their wounds?
There's another race next week.

Purple? Pink? Chevrolet Bets on Wacky Car Colors

There's something about the smallest of cars that lend themselves to wild paint jobs.

But purple? And pink? When it comes to its two smallest models, Sonic and Spark, Chevrolet is plumbing the depths of customer appeal for colors like, well, plum.

The Chevrolet Sonic is temporarily going to come in a new color, Deep Magenta Metallic, which is described as a "chromatic plum" color. It's the kind of hue that car executives are hesitant to call for what it is: purple.

With the possible exception of old Plymouth Barracudas -- for which purple became somewhat of a signature color -- purple has been the kind of color that gets a car relegated to the back of sales lots. Never mind that Bentley showed off its latest Flying Spur model in purple at the New York Auto Show last spring.

Chevrolet is intent on being bold. About one-third of our Sonic buyers say a cool paint job is an 'extremely important' factor in their decision.

Chevy is being just as creative when it comes to its smaller car, Spark. Out went Inferno Orange and in came Techno Pink. At least it's called pink.

Chevrolet says it looks everywhere in developing a new color -- fashion runways, consumer products and high-end furniture galleries. But even when they appear popular, it's easy to balk at some colors.

Katherine Sirvio, GM senior design manager in charge of Chevy colors and trim globally, didn't want to include pink as a color when it launched Spark in South Korea three year ago. "We shied away from pink because it's kind of a cliché" as a lure for female buyers, she says.

But after surveying personal electronics and home appliances, changed her mind. Sure enough, nearly one out of four Sparks sold in South Korea are now pink.
